The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley is the local government covering the district of the East Kimberley and includes the towns of Wyndham and Kununurra. The Shire began as the East Kimberly Road Board in 1888 and then changed Wyndham Road Board in 1897. The Shire then moved to the Kununurra Local Township when Kununurra was developed in the early 1960s to service the construction of the Ord Irrigation Scheme.
