The Marist Sisters were founded in France in 1817 as a branch of the Society of Mary, after the tumultuous times of the French revolution and with the ongoing effects of the Napoleonic Wars on society and the Church. Inspired by the presence and role of Mary in the midst of the Apostles in the new-born Church of Pentecost, with all Marists the Sisters sought to live the Gospel in Marys way or as expressed in the words of their Founder to think as Mary, feel as Mary, judge and act as Mary in all things. Their presence among people was to be marked by such qualities as simplicity, humility, gentleness, a warm approach to people of all kinds, and a readiness to respond to the more urgent needs of the people of their time. It wasnt until 1908 that three Sisters arrived in Sydney seeking to live this vision here and like Mary to show to all the gracious forgiveness and tender-loving mercy of God.
